One Year Ago Today: I Gave Birth

by Eve on March 24, 2011

On March 24, 2010, I gave birth to the most amazing little boy.

It was a long time coming.

37 hours to be exact. What? Yeah, you read that right.

37 long hours.

After we hit the 30 hour mark, my awesome doctor, Dr. Marino came into tell me she was only going to give me a little while longer since I’d only dilated 4 cm from the day before. The word was looming over me like an ugly storm cloud. C-Section. Ugh. I didn’t want to deliver via c-section. I wanted a natural birth. I was managing the pain pretty well and I wanted to keep going. I asked her to please just give me some time. I wasn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.

I have nothing against women who elect to have a c-section. To each her own, right? Whatever you want to do is the right thing for you. I just really had my heart set on having a natural birth the old fashioned way. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for pain meds, I just didn’t want a c-section. The recovery time is significantly longer and more painful than a vaginal birth. I mean, it’s major surgery after all. I didn’t want major surgery after all that I’d been through to get to this point.

After a few more hours passed, Dr. Marino came in to to tell me that this was it. We couldn’t wait anymore. Handsome had been in position for 36 hours and we weren’t making any progress. I cried and cried. She comforted me by telling me that he was ok and I was ok, but that if we kept waiting it could potentially be not ok for Handsome. That was it. We prepared for the c-section.

Hubby getting dressed for the surgery.

Putting on his second gown, after tearing the first one. Give him a break, he was nervous.

The amazing Dr. Marino and my awesome sister, who never left my side the whole 37 hours.

Last pic I took before surgery. I love my husband so much, I couldn't have done this without him.

Wasn't he a beautiful newborn? He was about 2 hours old here. Daddy took this pic, because I was in recovery.

I love sharing birth stories. My second boy was a C-section. We were only at the hospital for about 20 minutes before I had to have emergency surgery because we didn’t have time for an epidural. They put me out completely. I missed the whole event!
But 37 hours?! I think I may have gotten the better end of the deal. I’m so sorry! :)
